Does anyone know where i can get pet advice?

I have a friend who has miniature jack russells and my kids fell in love with them over a year ago (well, so did i!) We have now decided to get one from a breeder. We will be colecting it in about 6 weeks but i really want to do my research before it arrives. Anyone know where i should go? I want to make sure my friend is telling me EVERYTHING!Does anyone know where i can get pet advice?
Hi. Congratulations for trying to find out a bit before the pup arrives. Firstly there is no such breed as a miniature Jack Russell. Secondly they are an energetic working breed so will need a lot of exercise! Thirdly your children (I don't know their ages) have to realise that it is an animal and not a toy. JR's can be a bit snappy if mishandled.

You should all sit down as a family and work out what 'words' are going to be used to train the little dog.

Ask your breeder or your local Vet where Puppy socialisation classes are held. (They are often held at Vets after surgery and usually by the nurses) As the pup gets a little older enrol in training classes at a reputable training club

Take out insurance for veterinary bills and third party injury.

I have really only just scratched the surface but it will give you some idea perhaps.

I wish you well with your new addition. Good LuckDoes anyone know where i can get pet advice?
try a website like the rspca or the pdsa or other such groups they normally have good pdf files or leaflets to download or a google of jack russels should bring up enthusiasts webpages.
My advice would be to register with a vet and ask there advice or go along or contact a kennel club and ask them .
First, do NOT get a puppy until it is at least 8 weeks old.

Second, download this free puppy book:

First of all, there is no such breed as miniature Jack Russells. Have a look at this site:

Here?!
The first thing to know is that there is no such thing as a minature Jack Russell terrier. There is a size standard for the breed (called Parson Russell terrier by the AKC) and the dogs should not be smaller than that standard. If the breeder is breeding for a size smaller than that standard, the puppies may be prone to health problems and may be frail. No reputable breeder would intentionally breed smaller than the standard.

Also JRTs are very active little dogs and need lots of exercise so be ready to provide that.
Speak with the vet.
The best advice anyone can give you if you're buying a Jack Russell is - take it to puppy training classes! These dogs are a breed that can be suspicious of other dogs if they don't get to spend a lot of time playing with them as pups. Plus you'll learn some great handling tips.
You can go to the AKC website and read up on the breed. What kind of research are you looking for? If you're just getting a pet quality dog, make sure your getting if from a reputable breeder, they will have a health guarentee. Then just enjoy your new puppy!
Try a local vet. Look in the local paper for people breeding Jacks and more important talk to people on the street whom you see with one.

Jacks are butch and feisty. They don't mind a good scrap. They are brave little terriers, good guard dogs, but watch the temperament especially with young children. When they bite they hang on.
